The Sistine Chapel: the extraordinary restoration of the XX century
Course: techniques and restorations of frescoes

A unique initiative that could not occur but in Rome thanks to the cooperation of the restorers who performed the extraordinary conservation work of the Sistine Chapel from 1980 to 1994.

Syllabus
Painting a fresco: preparation of lime and pozzolana mortar.
Spread of the intonaco (base plaster) on a mobile surface. Application of the “spolvero technique” (pouncing technique) which consists in the preparation of a cartoon design to be transferred onto the wall.
Preparation of the mortar and spread of the first day layer of plaster.
Design transfer and painting of the fresco.
Spread of the second day layer of plaster and completion of the work.
Completion of the painting including “a secco” finishing touches (on dry surface) with animal glue tempera.
Introduction to fresco restoration: analysis of the state of preservation and consolidation of the fresco.
Cleaning of the paint surface and glue removal.
Stucco-filling of wide lacunae with lime and pozzolana mortar and of small lacunae with lime mortar and marble powder.
Achromatic pictorial reintegration of wide lacunae and watercolour vertical “tratteggio” technique applied on small lacunae.
Application of the “strappo method” which consists in stripping off the painting layer of the fresco from the wall.
